The Gospel in Numbers

I’m reading in Numbers this week as I read through the Bible this second half of 2020. It is amazing to see the Old Testament scriptures pointing directly to Christ.  Below is a quick summary of what I found in Numbers 5:4-7.

The Gospel in Numbers
God Said Obey → We Will Fail → We Humbly Confess → God Fully Restores

Numbers 5:4-7 ESV And the people of Israel did so, and put them outside the camp; as the Lord said to Moses, so the people of Israel did. And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the people of Israel, When a man or woman commits any of the sins that people commit by breaking faith with the Lord, and that person realizes his guilt, he shall confess his sin that he has committed. And he shall make full restitution for his wrong, adding a fifth to it and giving it to him to whom he did the wrong.

1. OBEDIENCE
...as the Lord said to Moses, so the people did (v4)
•We are reminded of the importance of obedience.

2. FAILURE & SEPARATION
…When a man or woman commits any of the sins that people commit by breaking faith with the Lord (v6)
•We are reminded that we will fail (when, not if)
•We are reminded our failure breaks our relationship with the Lord

3. HOPE & HUMILITY
…he shall confess his sin that he has committed (v7)
•We are reminded failure is not the end, we have hope
•We are reminded of our own humility

4. RESTORATION
… he shall make full restitution for his wrong (v7)
•We are reminded God allows for and provides a way for full restoration
